Five ways to "go green" in Raleigh. Think outside of the box and snag yourself some greenery indoors and out: from art to activities, from edibles to do-ables.
Five Ways to "GO GREEN" in Raleigh
While going green typically means pursuing more environmentally friendly lifestyle choices to protect our bounty of natural resources, let's get playful today!
While you can recycle your Amazon boxes at the Jaycee Center and skip the plastic bags by request at Harris Teeter, I'm talking about going green in a whole new way.
Why don't you....?
- Hop on a LimeBike
- Visit the Arboretum
- Swing by Grabbagreen for healthy fast-food eats
- View Ben Knight's "A Father's Pride" at Art Source
- Cruise the Greenway with your pal or pup
- Curb the sugar crash at Two Roosters Ice Cream...Green Bean flavor (!)
"Raleigh: The Park With a City in It". A plan that began as a passion in 1970 now welcomes bikers, families, and furry friends into the great outdoors with hundreds of miles of protected wetlands and green spaces galore connected by a single pathway.

Lime Bikes arrived in raleigh in 2017 at the invitation of NC State's transportation department. The bike-share program is based out of California but has become popular in many cities around the US for it's low cost of use, non-docking nature, and sense of adventure. Maybe Bird scooters are more your thing, but if there is no need for speed and cruising is the pace of the day, hop on and enjoy the ride!
The JC Raulston Arboretum has thrived since it's beginnings in 1976 with thanks to their team of local volunteers, serving the scene as gardeners, receptions, and tour guides. This Raleigh green space educates and fascinates all ages with its gorgeous display of native plants, curved archways, and winding pathways. Note: the Arboretum is always looking for volunteers. Please consider putting yourself (or your teen!) to the task when you feel like doing some local good.

Onto GrabbaGreen. While I prefer to steer my kids away from fast-food choices, I'm happy to breeze them into this healthy alternative located conveniently in N. Hills. With it's large offerings of organics on the menu, all proteins cooked on-site, and every meal prepared to order it's a dining dash that checks all the boxes. It's relatively cheap, healthy, and delicious.
My go-to order for lunch is a Red Phoenix and a Power Pail w/ Chicken, Sweet Potato, and Chimichanga Sauce...all from the child's menu, but don't judge...it's the perfect combo meal. You can even order ahead from their app to pick-up and go.
Next...when I'm trying to breathe some life into a blank wall at home or inspire my 9-year old creative, I head to Art Source in N. Hills. This gallery and frame shop hosts works from over 75 artists, many from the Southeast. I'm a personal fan of the clean lines and bold colors of Ben Knight...but go see what speaks to you. This is the most unassuming gallery you've ever been in. You will never be pressured to buy. Partners Nancy McClure and Sharon Tharrington seem genuinely please that you've stop by, even if you are just window-shopping. Cheers to that. Art is for everyone!
Then...when the summer sun is blazing down and we think Raleigh is TOO HOT...or when the winter chill is in the air and we complain that Raleigh is TOO COLD, make like baby bear* and find something JUST RIGHT. Put down the remote, unplug the iPads, and boost the mood with a jaunt on the Greenway.
* I reserve the right to blog with a sense of levity and informality. My jokes and/or analogies will often be downright terrible. Please just roll with it...and I'll be forever grateful. xo
Two Roosters Ice Cream gets all of their milk and cream from Homeland Creamery in Julian, NC and the NC State Dairy in Raleigh, NC. Their flavors are extraordinary. Pie bits are crumbled from actual scratch-made pies and the flavors range from the expected to the extraordinary. They are hands down my favorite when I'm craving a scoop.
That's it for today, folks.
For now...
Maggie xo
